Linoleum Carving

Metallic Paints Glinting in Light

Initial Sketch
1/5
The process begins with a drawing of the fairy, which is transferred onto a block of linoleum and carved out. When sturdy paper is pushed into the carved out linoleum, it conforms to the carving and embosses the character, making a three-dimensional work that imitates the wrinkles and lines of skin stretched or folded over muscle and fat. The final step of the process is painting the embossement with metallic watercolors to brighten the image while highlighting the sculptural aspects of the embossment.
